Why are specific news beats covered by specific gender?

Image
Behind those glamorous faces of news channels and the hardcore truths and lies we see, with which ‘beats’ are largely associated in media organisations across the commonwealth, what fascinates me even more is the assumption that normally certain beat coverage work well with a particular gender.      In the world of profession, where ‘predominant beat’ actually refers to subjects, are generally covered by a news-'man' in the course of reporting. Let me fairly dare to explain.      Basically Hard beats, as the name suggests, largely resultant with subjects considered ‘aggressor’ in particularly journalistic jargon. These were usually almost always assigned to male reporters. Monition are topics like crime, economy, sports, politics.      There are 74% male journalists in national newspapers and the rest female. Infact it's worse to know only 2-3% female journalists cover sports. (Source: theguardian.com)      But if you go and look at the universities then the

Are news stories gender neutral?

Image
So here's an article that won a national award for being gender sensitive and neutral. But is it really gender neutral? Read the article(link given below) and get back to the blog again to realize how much less consciously, we consume media. https://www.google.co.in/amp/www.thehindu.com/news/national/happy-feet-in-mumbra/article5042555.ece/amp/     Happy feet in Mumbra              Reviewing from a gender perspective ( which age group did the story address, types of sources used for the story, kind of words and language used, quotes used, whether the journalist is male or female): Mumbra- a name used in every single paragraph of this article. A place with a major population of people belonging to muslim community. But seems like the ethnicity of girls is used as a tool to grab the attention of people. Also, continuously emphasizing on how class, caste and religion demand men and women to follow traditional practices and fulfill societal expectations. The 1st par

A counter to extreme feminism

Image
Does nudity mean bringing gender equality? If all girls go nude will the gender inequality disappear? Why not! May be it's your choice to go nude but Coming across certain feminists who demand desexualization of women by asking them to post their nude pictures, as if the audience will perceive it the way we want! Yes, I am talking about feminists 'naqvi Sarah, priyanka Paul and Saloni chopra', they portray feminism through their art work and are all popular feminists on Instagram.      But what they do and ask others to do, is it actually the need of the hour? And do they themselves go nude? In a country like India where women cannot go to Temple during their periods, these girls ask them to go nude in temples and churches. Do they go nude to churches? Is this the extreme need of our country right now or is it to focus on prevention of sexual harassment and rape first.      Their goal is to make people understand that breasts are just a piece of flesh and bra is j

They don't rape, but they support rapists!

Image
On 23rd december 2017, the Jabalpur high Court declares life imprisonment to the four men accused in "Bhopal gang-rape case on October 31st"      A 19 year old, female upsc aspirant in bhopal who around 7pm was returning back from her coaching institute gets raped near habibganj railway station after being kidnapped.      The rapists leave her at the spot assuming she is dead and snatch all her jewellery & mobile. The girl manages to go home & informs her parents, both of them are police officers      But the worst part is two doctors of Madhya Pradesh's sultania women hospital gave a fake report claiming that the girl was indulged in consensual sex and not a rape. These doctors got arrested on Nov 11 but the thing is, there are people who do not rape but support rapists! They may be bribed or possibly with any reason favoured the rapists.      If such highly educated doctors who I cannot call educated anymore! When they indulge in such disgustin

Are item numbers actually entertaining?

Image
Are item numbers actually entertaining? I've come across some ridiculous lyrics with their abusive and cheap content targeting  women and men. And it is absolutely pathetic to know that how people consume it as their daily entertainment.      One of the worst songs I came across is the song ' pinky hai paise walo ki' from movie ' zanjeer ' starring priyanka chopra.      So the song begins like this: 'Bol bol Rani kya chahie? Bungla chahie ya car chahie ? To which pinky replies   'Cash chahie muje cash chahie'  Is she an object? No! Is she a product? Is she someone you can buy in exchange of a car or bunglow and compare her value with any of these? And is it really necessary to portray men in this manner? Do men really buy women or try to get her by doing this? No, not all but these type of songs undoubtedly give birth to more such morons.      But what is disgusting is, when the woman herself replies 'I need cash'. She herself Sell

What do Indian ads serve us?

Image
Indian ads that we see daily on television, promote a lot of gender stereotypes, distort human pictures and give birth to dehumanising images of men and women. Eg. 'Mard Hoke ye ladkiyo wali cream use karte ho?' Or 'men will be men' or when a girl gets job because she uses fair and lovely.      One of the ad that disturbs me alot is the 'MTR BREAKFAST MIX AD' where the woman of the house early morning in kitchen asks the family members as to what would they like to have for breakfast and each of them put their choice, the husband says ' dosa ', followed by the daughter ' upma ' the father in law ' rava idli' and the son ' vada '. The lady cooks them all at once possessing six hands.          Is it really necessary to show a lady as superwoman and increase more burden on her settling a rhetoric image of a woman in the minds of people?     Though not consciously but media does effect and influence us sub-conciously.
